Mljet National Park is one of the places in Croatia that cannot be missed, because you will see one of the rare natural phenomenons – the two saltwater lakes, among other natural and cultural attractions.
Mljet was declared a national park in the 1960 and it represents the first institutionalized attempt to protect an original ecosystem in the Adriatic.
Due to its location in the Adriatic Sea, the island of Mljet was inhabited by the Illyrians, Greeks and Romans, who left the archaeological remains of great historical and cultural value, such as a Roman palace in Polače from 3rd century.
The island of Mljet also known as the "Green Island" is located in the southern Croatian, 30 km northwest of the world famous town of Dubrovnik. Mljet is famous for its legends and stories, as well as a sanctuary for the Mediterranean monks.
The Western part of Mljet was proclaimed National Park. The Mljet National Park features two salt lakes: the great and the small lake (Veliko i Malo jezero) connected with the open sea via narrow straits. In the midst of the Great Lake lies a small islet of St. Mary housing a Benedictine monastery from the 12th century.
Dubrovnik and Mljet are connected with daily ferry lines. Timetables can be find at Jadrolinija's web site. The journey takes some 2 hours and 30 minutes.
You can also take the hydrofoil "Nona Ana" from Dubrovnik to Mljet which sails into the port of Sobra and during the summer it also makes a stop in Polače located near the Mljet National Park.
Jadrolinija has also got a regular line Mljet (Sobra port) - Prapratno (peninsula Peljesac) throughout the year, while in the season there is an additional line Mljet island (Sobra port) - Korčula and Mljet (Sobra port) - Split.
There is a possibility of renting bicycles and smalla cars on the Mljet island.
